Interview with Ronny Wenkse

Ronny has been with us since 2012, when he joined our Customer Service team as a Solution Agent. After gaining new skills and taking various opportunities over the years, he found his way into his current position as Consumer Process Manager. In this interview, he talks about his journey and how humor is an important part of his daily working life.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was a child, I always dreamed of becoming a cameraman. I just found films fascinating. It turned out I wasn't good at it after I destroyed my father's expensive video camera while shooting a homemade film about aliens! I decided that being a screenwriter would be a better fit. However, it has remained an unfulfilled dream, unfortunately. But watching movies fills the gap in the meantime.

What was the last thing you bought/sold on eBay Kleinanzeigen?

I found my allotment on eBay Kleinanzeigen. Whether gardening or building a raised flowerbed, it just makes me feel good to have achieved something visible at the end of the day. In addition to the allotment itself, the people that own the garden next to mine turned out to be the greatest neighbors you can imagine. We have now become very good friends.

Ronny, you have been with the company for more than 8 years. What made you stay and which part of your journey did you like the most?

The opportunity to learn a lot of new things and develop personally made me start working at eBay Kleinanzeigen in 2012 in the first place. Even though we have grown enormously as a company since then, I feel exactly the same every day as I did when I started 8 years ago. I appreciate the funny and open exchanges I have with my team members.

After joining our Customer Service team as a Solution Agent, I developed further skills in analysis and gathering customer insights to improve our product. In 2016, I designed and presented the first monthly market research report (which has continued to this day) into our main classifieds competitors to management and stakeholders. Then, from 2018 I began to learn how to adapt cross-functional work methods to better facilitate collaboration between four teams from the Trust and Safety department (externally and internally), and I even learned how to develop a mission and vision statement for eBay Kleinanzeigen.

However, for me the last two years were the most enjoyable, as I got the opportunity to develop further in process management and was able to take on new, exciting tasks. All the things that I learned over the years are now coming together and helping me to be successful.

Every day, we try to create the best and safest platform for our users. However, some people violate our terms of use. Your job requires you to deal with these challenges and you make it hard for these people to succeed. How do you manage to always stay so positive?

What helps me to maintain the necessary distance is to make sure that I calm down after work. Working with plants in my own garden really helps here, as it pushes away any bad energy that might have accumulated during the day. I also know that we are working as a team to keep the "bad guys" away from the platform and that I don't have to solve this alone – this really helps me to tackle it from a positive perspective every day. You also learn a lot from these bad guys. I can tell you that sometimes they get very creative and that you have to get just as creative to catch them.

You are also part of eBay Kleinanzeigen’s Research Guild. What is the purpose of this guild and how much time do you invest in supporting it?

The purpose is to improve fact-based decision making and drive customer-centric awareness across the company by fostering a research culture, setting standards, sharing insights and empowering internal stakeholders to help themselves. How much time is devoted to this strongly depends on which projects come next, and can range from a few hours to days. Personally I believe that this time spent on conducting user and market research will improve the understanding of target groups and markets across the company.
