Interview with Lena Müller

Lena recently returned from maternity leave to her position as Senior Product Analyst. In our interview, she talks about the compromises she needs to deal with and how important a good team is in helping her handle the new situation.

What did you want to become when you were a child?

I cannot recall any specific childhood dream, but I remember that there was a time that I wanted to be a nurse, just like my mother, as a lot of kids aspire to become like their parents. The only thing I knew when I was a little older that I wanted to move to a big city, since I grew up between two small villages, so funnily enough not even in a village.

What did you last buy / sell on eBay Kleinanzeigen?

The last thing I sold was a baby walker, after my son learned to walk. We also bought a lot of baby stuff on ebay Kleinanzeigen, since most things are only used for a couple of months and are still in very good shape even used. Apart from saving a lot of money, we also had many positive experiences – one time we received a couple of baby books as additional gift with something we bought.

Do you think there are gender differences in the workplace?

Generally I believe there are still major differences between men and women in other industries, esp. the old economy. In the e-commerce industry and at ebayK it really doesn’t matter. Our management team is a great example, since we have roughly an equal number of men and women there. Regardless of background or hierarchy, it feels like everyone is treated equally and at eye level, which I value a lot when working at Kleinanzeigen. I even think that it’s the diversity that makes us such a successful and great team.

If you could change one thing at eBayK - what would it be?

This is a very personal and highly subjective matter, but since I am a mother I’d actually been thinking: if there is one thing I would like to change I would change the location of our company to somewhere in the city. I commute around 40 minutes one way to work by car and that’s when the traffic is good. As quality time with my family was very limited prior to our new home office situation, both the omitted travel time to the office and ebay Kleinanzeigen’s very flexible ways of working are effects and circumstances I value a lot today.

You have recently returned from parental leave. Which challenges have you been confronted with? How are you dealing with them and how was eBay Kleinanzeigen able to support you?

It’s been a couple of months now that I’ve been back to work with a 30-hour work week. It was a big challenge for me to manage my own expectations. When you go back to work after being a full time mom for over a year, it feels like you are suddenly living a big compromise. You are not 100% mom anymore, but also not back to 100% analyst. This is something that I needed to learn and accept for myself and to adjust my own expectations. But the thought that even in a 40-hour work week you never get everything done either helped me a lot. My analytics team and my cross-functional project team have been very considerate in scheduling meetings and planning to accommodate my part-time situation. In addition, I have great colleagues who have supported me during this phase. We have others who returned from maternity leave recently and many colleagues also have kids at home. So exchanging experiences with others helps as well.
