Interview with Kabeer Singh

As millions of workers around the world started to work from home for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many didn’t know what to expect. One of them was Kabeer, who recently became a member of our eBay Kleinanzeigen family as our new SEO Marketing Manager. Since he grew up in a highly competitive environment and is a passionate soccer player, he drew strength from his former experiences, applying them to his newfound work situation. Preparing, strategizing, and teamwork are important skills not just on a soccer field – they also come into their own when working from home. It didn’t take long for him to come to a major realization during this process: “You are your own biggest competitor.”

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A soccer player! Soccer isn’t a sport that you would necessarily associate with India. Even in a city like New Delhi with so many people, I remember having such a hard time finding six to eight people who I could play soccer with. There weren’t really any prospects or opportunities to take up soccer seriously back then. I still spend a lot of my time watching, playing, and discussing soccer. And as soccer is a team game, there are so many similarities in terms of preparing, strategizing, teamwork, etc. that I am able to learn from and use in other (work) environments

What was the last thing you bought/sold on eBay Kleinanzeigen?

Due to our move to Berlin, I had to bid farewell to my wonderful computer desk as it wouldn’t fit into the new apartment properly. We are also in the process of selling our 1.5-year-old (newish) kitchen appliances, as our current apartment already had a furnished kitchen. This second one isn’t technically the ‘last thing we bought’, but it was as recently as a few weeks back. We got lucky with our apartment search before moving to Berlin and found two apartments instead of one. So we had to find tenants for one of the apartments, and of course we found them through our platform (even though we had posted the ad on the usual websites).

You joined the eBay Kleinanzeigen family after the coronavirus lockdown in Germany. This means you started working full-time from home and haven’t met your colleagues in person yet, only virtually. How did you feel when you heard that you’d be working from home until at least Sep 1?

I have to admit that I saw it coming, but it was something that I wasn’t looking forward to hearing as I knew it was going to be a huge challenge. And a month on I can confirm that it really has been, but almost all my colleagues have been extremely helpful so far. And more importantly, it’s getting better every day. Of course, having said that, I can’t wait to start working from the office soon!

How was the remote onboarding process managed/organized?

The onboarding process was extremely well-structured, with meetings already scheduled, and a list of topics to read through. In under a week, almost all my remote accesses were working perfectly, and there were no IT glitches whatsoever.

Is there anything that we could have done differently to provide a better start/onboarding?

Nothing that I can think of – everything has gone smoothly, and I feel I have had a great start.

How did you and your colleagues get to know one another?

It has been mostly via Zoom calls so far. But luckily, I did get a chance to meet few of them in person thanks to the Sustainable Friday initiative.

How would you like to continue working in the future?

I would really like to get the right balance between working from home and the office in the long run. This balance would help both with aspects of my work where I need to focus and times when collaboration is important, as well as saving on commuting time.
